Plated-through half-holes
Through-hole plated half-holes are mainly used to realise board-to-board connections, e.g. to connect printed circuit boards of different technologies with each other.
This allows rigid-flex or ceramic PCBs or complex microcontroller modules,
for example, to be mounted on their own customised PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More.
The realised half-hole contacts offer more stability than simple surface contacts and finally result in a much flatter structure than conventional pin header solutions.
The recommendations for the design parameters are based on the usual
specifications for solder stop bars and clearances. If possible, the inner layer pads should be connected to the through-hole plating in order to
to achieve additional stability.

Edge metallisation
Sections of the PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More contour or cut-outs in the inner area of the PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More can be partially metallised, i.e. plated through.
The corresponding areas are milled before the first through-hole plating process and are then plated through with the drill holes. Recommendation for the surface: ENIG.
