The data required for production in Gerber and Excellon format does not contain all the important information that the manufacturer needs for production but also for optimal costing.
Information that is not (clearly) transmitted via the production data is e.g.
- Material requirements
- PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More thickness
- Color of the solder resist or legend
- layer stackup
- Copper thickness
- etc.
A detailed and standardized specification for printed circuit boards reduces technical and commercial queries as well as recalculations and ensures rapid and high-quality production.
A good specification has a significant influence on the preparation of quotations and order processing. Missing or incorrectly provided information can create a need for additional clarification and, in the worst case, lead to incorrect services and increased costs.
The IPC-2581 consortium is taking an important step in this direction with the development of the corresponding format.
Further information on the IPC-2581 can be found under Data formats.

The Krefeld discussion forum of the FED Düsseldorf regional group has also turned its attention to the complex topic of PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More specifications, which for years has occupied customers, designers, PCBauch: gedruckte Schaltung, engl.: PCB – Printed circuit boar… More manufacturers, service providers and component manufacturers alike. Please refer to the FED publication on this topic.
